Where are the young women?

Young women and gender diverse people share their thoughts on Australian federal politics and the upcoming 2022 election - and what needs to change. Read the report via the link below.

So where are they?

9 young women and gender-diverse people who share the issue they care about the most, their expectations of politicians, and an urgent appeal to candidates to act on the issues that matter to young women and gender diverse people.

Driven by the shared belief that all young voices should be heard, Raise Our Voice Australia has proudly partnered with The Body Shop Australia to ask young women and gender diverse Australians about their political engagement.

With just under 500 responses, this research captured their reflections on media reporting and politics, and the impact this has on their political actions. Together, we hope to amplify these voices.

Together we created a 5-minute survey for young women and gender diverse people aged 30 and under. Responses were received across states, metro and regional areas, from people living with a disability, LGBTQIA+, and culturally, ethically, or linguistically diverse communities.

From the results we extracted three key takeaways; there is a strong belief that Governments should reflect the diversity of the Australian populace, media portrayal of women in politics is seen as being predominately negative, and young women and non-binary people are paying attention.

Given these conversations, we created recommendations for enduring change - read them in our survey report below.

Is there a pressing issue you believe isn’t being addressed?

Knowing where to start can be one thing, this paired with the consistent negative portrayal of women who are in government in the media further encourages the disengagement of young, diverse voices.

Is there a pressing issue that you don’t see any action being taken on? If you could ask your local MP to help your cause, what would it be? Let us know what you think by submitting a message.
